Good or Bad: The power of internal messages

We all talk to ourselves subconsciously. In fact, I’m not embarrassed to say that as a solo entrepreneur, there are times that I talk out loud to myself! I ask myself questions and I respond in kind. And while that is weird and probably off-putting for some… it is a reality. Our inside voices are constantly talking to themselves: sharing advice, alerting us to danger, reflecting on past experiences. And sometimes those internal voices – I call them “gremlins” [1]– can get rea

Boundaries: Fight back against the slippery slope

As women entrepreneurs - as humans really – we are constantly setting boundaries around what is and is not okay in our lives. For many of us – especially those of us who have chosen to be our own bosses – one of the boundaries we’ve set for ourselves is that we want to be in control of our future. We don’t want others to be able to cap our earnings, or shape our life, based on what they see as being important or relevant. We want to control how we live our lives, how we run o

The value of a friend... and a cup of tea.

You’ve got to have friends. Being a leader in business—whether you run a non-profit or a small business, can be lonely. You have a lot of responsibility. Limited time. Competing demands. Something has to give. For many of us, what gives is our social life. We are so busy managing our daily to-do lists, ensuring everything around us has what they need, that we run out of steam by the end of the day. At least that is the way things work for me. I recently had a good friend (and

    6 simple stress-relief strategies

If you find yourself burnt out at the end of the day, you’re not alone! Almost a quarter of Canadians report high levels of stress on a regular basis.[1] Females generally report higher levels of stress, and those aged 20 to 54 report the highest levels. Sound familiar? The first week in May is Mental Health Week.[2] To honour this important event, we’ve decide to compile a list of ways we can help deal with a very common mental health issue: stress. A little bit of stress is

    The view from here

As I write this I am sitting in White Rock on a nice spring day (considering the weather we’ve had) enjoying some fresh air. It’s been a long winter of rain, snow, and being cooped up in my basement office. It’s nice to get some new scenery … to change the view that I gaze at as I work at my computer. From here, I glance at the boardwalk and the seaside walk. The song “Jump” by Van Halen is blasting from a nearby restaurant. Couples and groups are walking by talking and giggl

What Batman taught me about business

Creativity. Fun. Laughter. All are easy to lose in the day-to-day-busy-ness of our lives, particularly when we are entrepreneurs juggling our business and our family obligations. However, I’m here to tell you that we need more creativity, more fun, and more laughter. Rarely do we take time to slow down, breathe, and take a moment to explore something a little different; something that might make us smile, giggle, or actually snort. There is great value in laughing so hard you

Personal Reflection: Get out and Play!

I love that the sun is out and that the trees are showing the first buds of spring. It is energizing. April is also the month that I begin to live at the ball field on the evenings and weekends. Both of my girls play ball and they love it. Seeing them so excited about doing something they love reminds me that I need to integrate more fun into my everyday life. To get out and play…. I’m often so caught up in getting things crossed off my to-do list, that I forget to take a brea

5 nutrition tips to boost your energy

The beginning of March is a tricky time. We keep hearing that spring is just around the corner, but that can be hard to believe when we keep receiving snowfall warnings! If you feel that your energy level is below normal, you’re not alone. Thankfully, there are some simple ways to put more pep in our step, in a healthy way. Along with getting enough sleep and increasing our activity level (even a brisk walk can be immensely helpful!), nutrition is a great way to boost our ene
