The Economic Impact of Nonprofits

Considered by many to be a sideline industry, the economic impact of the non-profit is beginning to be recognized as a mainstream contributor to the national economy. In 1999, Statistics Canada measured the value of the non-profit sector at 6.9% of the standard gross domestic product (GDP). This economic measure positions the non-profit sector as being more valuable to the national economy than motor vehicle manufacturing, agriculture, mining, oil and gas extraction, and the retail trade industry. With a passion for Dr. Seuss, and a love of the written language, Vicki Austad doesn't automatically strike a person as being a visionary leader who is 'driving' her organization to continually strive for the betterment of New Westminster. However, if one sits still and listens, the passion, dedication, and energy that have enabled her to position New Westminster Community Development Society (NWCDS) as one of the few viable urban CED organizations comes through.

Personal Reflections

Business never flows quite the way I plan it. It is not a case of poor planning, goals not set, or actions not followed through on. It is simply a case of un-seen opportunities; opportunities, that as a business person, I need to evaluate and determine whether or not they are right for me and my company.
